Gov't to Conduct Radiation Exposure Checkup on N. Korean Defectors

The Unification Ministry plans to conduct radiation exposure checkups on North Korean defectors coming from areas close to the North’s nuclear test site.

Ruling Democratic Party lawmaker Park Byeong-seug told reporters Wednesday the checkup will help understand the impact of the North’s nuclear tests on the health of the residents in the affected regions.

The ministry said 114 recent defectors are from Kilju County in North Hamgyong Province, where the North Korean nuclear site Punggye-ri is located.

Thirty volunteers will receive the checkup by the end of this year, including a screening for possible cancers and thyroid disorders.
