Defense Minister Says US Will Not Unilaterally Engage in War on Korean Peninsula

Defense Minister Song Young-moo says the United States will not exclude South Korea and unilaterally engage in war on the Korean Peninsula.

Lawmakers questioned Song about the possibility of the United States taking unilateral military action during Thursday's National Assembly inspection of the Defense Ministry.

Song also said that South Korea and the U.S. had held consultations in advance on the flight late last month of U.S. B-1B Lancer bombers in international airspace above the East Sea. Song said he had spoken with his U.S. counterpart on the matter over the phone.

Song declined comment on questions about taking out the North’s leadership, or what some call the "decapitation" strategy.

He said the ministry believes that the North is not yet capable of deploying nuclear weapons.
