Political Parties Divided over Claim of Tampered Timeline of Sewol Sinking

Anchor: The presidential office has decided to request an investigation into the alleged fabrication of documents regarding former President Park Geun-hye's activities during the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster. A senior Cheong Wa Dae official said on Friday that after further review, the top office plans to formally request the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office look into the allegations.
Our Park Jong-hong has the details.
Report: Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok on Thursday told reporters that documents were found suggesting that the timeline regarding briefings on the sinking of the ferry Sewol was altered.

The timeline was modified to cast the former president in a more favorable light.
Based on the documents, the initial report of the sinking to then president Park Geun-hye was changed from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on April 16th, 2014 -- the day the ill-fated ship capsized.
The former administration had claimed Park was informed about the sinking at 10 a.m. and she issued her first instructions 15 minutes later.
The presidential office says it views the modifications as constituting the crime of producing a false public document.
In response, the ruling Democratic Party called the revelation shocking and called on the prosecution to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

Party spokeswoman Kim Hyun said this reveals that the former government's explanations about the sinking turned out to be lies.

The minor opposition People's Party claimed, should it be true, this cannot be tolerated and stressed the need to revise the system so that the president does not wield too much power.

However, the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, affiliated with Park, raised doubts about the presidential office's claim.

It also called for an end to the "politicizing" of the tragedy claiming the timing of the disclosure is apparently aimed at distracting attention away from the parliamentary inspection of the current government.
