Eight Lawmakers Leave Bareun Party

The splinter conservative Bareun Party is losing eight members who intend to rejoin the main opposition Liberty Korea Party.

The group tendered their defection forms to Bareun officials on Wednesday afternoon, two days after they publicly announced their decision to leave.

Scores of nonparliamentary members of the party, including the heads of 51 local party chapters, eleven members of the councils of metropolitan cities and 37 members of the councils of smaller cities are expected to follow suit.

The Bareun Party's acting chief and floor leader Joo Ho-young also plans to jump ship after the party’s national convention slated for next Monday.

By submitting their defection forms, the eight lawmakers have depraved the party of its status as a parliamentary negotiation group, cutting their seats in the National Assembly from 20 to just 12.

Representative Hwang Young-cheul, the de facto spokesman for the defecting lawmakers, said the LKP has planned a welcoming ceremony for them on Thursday morning.
