Moon Says 'People First' is Common Philosophy of S. Korea, ASEAN

President Moon Jae-in says that South Korea and Southeast Asian nations have a common philosophy of "people first" and he will work to advance bilateral relations while placing a high priority on the “people.”

The president on Monday unveiled his visions for a people-centered Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) community in his contribution to Project Syndicate, a U.S. site carrying op-ed commentaries by global leaders and thinkers.

Moon, who is visiting the Philippines for ASEAN meetings, said that ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together, which was endorsed by the association’s leaders in November 2015, states that the group strives to be a “people-centered, people-oriented community” which seeks to build a caring and sharing society.

He said that “people first” has been his longstanding political philosophy, and it is a vision in line with the spirit of Korea’s “candlelight revolution” that lit and heated up the winter in Korea a year ago.

He added that South Korea and the ASEAN share a common philosophy which values people, and that shared outlook will set the path that South Korea and the association will take together in the years and decades.
