Yoo Seong-min Becomes New Leader of Bareun Party

Four-term lawmaker Yoo Seong-min has become the new leader of the splinter Bareun Party.

The minor party elected Yoo and supreme council members during a national party convention held at the National Assembly on Monday.

Yoo’s victory comes six months after his defeat at the May ninth presidential election.

During his days at the Grand National Party(GNP) when it was the ruling party, Yoo served as a supreme council member and later as floor leader of the Saenuri Party, which was a new name given to the GNP. It marks the first time for Yoo to assume the top party post.

The Bareun Party started off as the fourth largest party in the National Assembly with 33 seats this January. The party was formed by those who defected from the Liberty Korea Party(LKP) in protest of ex-President Park Geun-hye and her followers.

But it lost its status as a parliamentary negotiation group after 22 of its lawmakers defected to the LKP over two courses and the party ended up with just eleven seats.

Last week when nine lawmakers left the party to rejoin the LKP, legislators who remained in the Bareun Party agreed to pursue discussions within a month on integrating centrist and conservative forces.

As a result, Yoo is tasked with producing tangible results in such integration talks while maintaining the party’s reformist conservative identity.
