Gov't Sets up Emergency Task Force to Cope with Earthquake in Pohang

The government has set up an emergency task force to cope with a strong earthquake that hit the country’s southeastern coastal region on Wednesday.
 
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the central disasters safety relief headquarters led by Interior Minister Kim Boo-kyum is responding to the aftermath of the five-point-four magnitude earthquake, adding its eight-member workforce could increase later.
 
A ministry official said the headquarters immediately requested broadcasters such as KBS to inform the public of the quake and will hold discussions with related regional authorities to assess the damage and formulate countermeasures.
 
It also plans to work out countermeasures in collaboration with related government agencies, including the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), Land Ministry and Trade Ministry.
 
According to the KMA, the earthquake hit nine kilometers north of Pohang's northern district in North Gyeongsang Province at around 2:29 p.m. on Wednesday.
