Foreign Ministry Expresses Hope Over UN Official's N. Korea Trip

Seoul's Foreign Ministry expressed hope over a visit to North Korea by UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.

On Tuesday, the ministry said that through the visit, it hopes the international community's unified commitment to stopping North Korea's provocations and threats can be conveyed to Pyongyang so that it can swiftly return to the path of meaningful denuclearization.

In a regular briefing, ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk was asked about how the ministry views the UN official's trip and whether Seoul and the United Nations had prior consultation.

The spokesman said the South Korean government holds close discussions with the UN on global issues, including North Korea.

On whether the UN sounded out the possibility of the undersecretary first visiting South Korea before heading to the North, the spokesman said he will respond to that later after confirming.

He added that it is believed that the UN will brief South Korea on the result of the North Korea trip at a later time.
