Parliamentary Deadlock Expected with Passage of Budget Bill

Signs of a political impasse have surfaced after the ruling Democratic Party(DP) passed next year’s budget plan despite strong protest from the main opposition Liberty Korea Party(LKP).
The LKP raised suspicions that the DP and the minor People’s Party reached a backroom deal on the budget plan after it was passed on Wednesday without the attendance of LKP lawmakers.
The LKP made the accusation based on a text message that DP Senior Deputy Floor Leader Park Hong-geun sent to People's Party lawmaker Kwon Eun-hee.
The message, which was revealed by a picture taken by the media, states that the DP and People’s Party will exert joint efforts for coming up with a bill seeking constitutional revision and for revamping the election system. The message stated that the two parties have agreed to pursue the passage of the constitutional revision bill during next year’s local elections.
DP Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae strongly criticized the LKP for engaging in irresponsible instigation by claiming that the budget bill is "Socialist.”
Meanwhile, LKP Floor Leader Chung Woo-taik claimed on a radio program that the DP and the People’s Party arranged a deal behind the scenes to pass the budget bill.
People’s Party Chairman Ahn Cheol-soo said his party will cooperate in the budget plan for the sake of people’s livelihoods while continuously pressing the Moon Jae-in government to take responsibility for the plan.
