Moon Calls for Deeper Cooperation with Turkey

President Moon Jae-in says that he is expecting Turkey’s cooperation on his administration’s so-called “New Northern Policy” for greater cooperation with Eurasia.

Moon made the request during a meeting with visiting Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim at the presidential office Wednesday, noting Turkey’s geopolitical role to build bridges between Asia and Europe.

The president also emphasized a long-standing close relationship between South Korea and Turkey, which dates back to the era of Korea’s ancient kingdom of Goguryeo and was cemented by Turkey’s deadly fight for South Korea during the Korean War. He thanked the Turkish public for their country’s sacrifice.

Moon also hoped that Seoul and Ankara will work together to expand their bilateral trade and create more opportunity for South Korea to invest in Turkey.

Yildirim conveyed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s good wishes to Moon, adding Erdogan is exploring the opportunity of visiting South Korea.

He also said the two countries have potential to further develop their friendly relations, calling for deeper bilateral cooperation to make it happen.
