Turkey Urges US to Reconsider Moving Embassy to Jerusalem

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has voiced opposition to Washington’s plan to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The prime minister relayed Ankara’s stance on the issue during a joint news conference with South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon in Seoul, following their meeting at the government complex Wednesday.

He said such a decision could retrigger tensions between Israel and Palestine and develop further into a conflict between religions.

Yildirim's remarks came after foreign media reported that U.S. President Donald Trump will declare Jerusalem as the official capital of Israel in a speech Wednesday in Washington.

Noting the significance of Jerusalem for Islam, the Turkish prime minister said his government hopes the issue won't be escalated, adding that as a wrong step could cause a big conflict in the international community, we have to take action to stop this.
