S. Korea Orders Diplomatic Missions in Middle East to Beef up Safety Measures

The Foreign Ministry has ordered South Korean diplomatic missions in the Middle East to beef up safety measures for Korean nationals abroad.

A ministry official said on Thursday that the ministry issued the order in light of the possibility that security conditions in the region may deteriorate.

Security concerns were raised for the region after U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, sparking large-scale protests around the Middle East.

The South Korean Embassy in Israel also asked Korean nationals and travel agencies in the region to pay extra attention to safety via text messages and a posting on its Web site.
