Moon Calls for Decentralization through Constitutional Amendment

President Moon Jae-in on Thursday called for a constitutional amendment to expand decentralization, adding the task must be completed sooner or later.

He noted that amending the Constitution to expand local autonomy is not particularly disputed among rival parties.

The remarks came as the president chaired a meeting of governors and mayors held in the Sejong administrative city.

During the meeting, a state vision on balanced national development was also proclaimed.

President Moon said that a constitutional revision is only a matter of time. He reminded the fact that all parties and presidential candidates had pledged during campaigning to put the amendment to a referendum at the time of local elections in June.

Moon said he believes there should be no reason for parties to clash over or politicize the issue as long as the amendment is centered on decentralization. He said other issues rival parties agree on can then be added.

It's the third time the president has hosted a gathering of nationwide governors and mayors.
