The Times Offers Apology for Describing Jeju Island as Japanese Territory

British daily The Times has offered an apology for describing South Korea's Jeju Island as a Japanese territory.

In its recent article about the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, The Times described Jeju Island on the unified Korea flag as a Japanese territory called Takeshima.

The article in question said that "the flag carried by the Korean athletes proved controversial not because it represented a union of two implacable foes, but because it appeared to lay claim to an island, circled, owned by Japan."

The paper issued a correction and an apology on Sunday afternoon after South Korea lodged a protest.

The Times said that it mistook Jeju Island as the Dokdo islets, which is administered by South Korea and claimed by Japan, adding Jeju Island is not an object of any dispute. It said that the island in dispute is not included in the unified Korea flag.
