PM Reprimands Gov't Agencies For Late Earthquake Notice

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has reprimanded disaster-handling government agencies for not swiftly informing citizens about Sunday's earthquake that shook along the country's southeastern coast.

Lee met with senior government officials at his office on Monday and instructed the Ministry of the Interior and the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) to investigate the cause of the information delay and draft measures to prevent a recurrence.

The prime minister also pointed out that the government's notice about the earthquake failed to live up to the public's expectation, even though the emergency disaster notification system was revised following the powerful five-point-eight magnitude tremor that rocked Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province in 2016.

A magnitude four-point-six tremor struck near Pohang at 5:03 a.m. on Sunday, but a public notice about the natural event was sent out via mobile phone around six-and-a-half minutes later.

The Interior and Safety Ministry attributed the delay to a technical glitch in the public notice system.
