S. Korea, US to Begin Joint Exercise from Sunday

The South Korean and U.S. militaries will begin their large-scale joint exercise known as the Foal Eagle on Sunday as scheduled.

A South Korean military official said Saturday troops and equipment will be deployed in phases according to the timetable of the exercise.

The Foal Eagle is a field training exercise involving troops and strategic assets.

It includes various drills conducted by the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

This year's exercise will mobilize some eleven-thousand-500 U.S. troops including reinforcements from overseas and 300-thousand Korean troops.

The two allies typically carry out the combined exercise in early March but it was delayed this year to avoid overlapping with the PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The length of the exercise is also being cut short to four weeks, half that of last year.

South Korea and the U.S. maintain the exercise this year will be held on a similar scale as in previous years.

But it’s known the exercise is taking place in a "low-key" manner with minimal deployment of U.S. strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula and drills to focus more on defense than attack.

These decision is seen as an effort not to provoke North Korea ahead of its summit meeting with South Korea in April and with the United States in May.
