PM Lee Emphasizes Neutrality of Public Officials ahead of Local Elections

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has warned that public officials caught illegally intervening in the upcoming local elections will be sternly punished according to related laws.

Lee made the remark on Thursday while presiding over a meeting on the government’s preparations for the June 13th elections at the government complex in Seoul, emphasizing the neutrality of public officials, particularly among those managing and overseeing elections.

He also called on related ministries to encourage people to vote in the local elections. He said turnout tends to be lower than in presidential or general elections, but it could be even lower this year due to other attention-grabbing issues such as the ongoing diplomatic efforts with North Korea.

Candidate registration for the local elections begins on May 24th.
