White House: US to Continue Preparations for Summit with N. Korea

The White House says that the U.S. is continuing to prepare for a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un despite the regime's threats to call it off.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a regular news briefing on Thursday that the president is prepared and will be ready to meet, adding Washington is continuing to move forward with preparations.

The spokeswoman said that if the North Koreans want to meet, the U.S. will be there, stressing that the summit was accepted by Trump at the request of Pyongyang.

Sanders said North Korea is not in the "driver's seat" despite their efforts to gain leverage.

She also reaffirmed that the U.S. has no plan to make changes to the ongoing Max Thunder air drills with Seoul, which was cited by North Korea as the reason for its cancellation of inter-Korean talks.
