In the wake of the suspension of South Korea's joint military exercises with the U.S. amid eased tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Seoul has decided not to hold this year's Ulchi drill scheduled for next month.

At a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, the government said the decision was made in line with recent political and security improvements on the peninsula and the suspension of South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises.

The annual Ulchi exercise is aimed at boosting the country's crisis management capabilities and warfare preparedness.

Following the Cabinet meeting, Interior Minister Kim Boo-kyum and Defense Minister Song Young-moo said that the government will come up with a new national emergency drill in connection with the South Korean military's Taeguk exercises.

The Ulchi Taeguk drills slated to be held starting next year will aim to prepare the nation against all types of emergencies ranging from enemy attacks to terrorism and natural disasters.
