Rival Parties Agree on Dividing Parliament's Leadership Positions

South Korea's rival parties have agreed over how to split the top parliamentary positions for the second half of the 20th National Assembly’s four-year term.

The floor leaders of the ruling Democratic Party, main opposition Liberty Korea Party, the minor Bareunmirae Party and the Assembly of Lawmakers for Peace and Justice reached the agreement on Tuesday, including on how to distribute the top posts of the various parliamentary standing committees.

Under the agreement, the National Assembly Speaker will be assumed by a member of the ruling Democratic Party while the LKP and the Bareunmirae Party will each get one of the two deputy positions.

Earlier, the DP recommended six-term lawmaker Moon Hee-sang as the next speaker. The LKP and the Bareunmirae Party plan to confirm their nominees soon.

The speaker and deputy speakers will be elected during a plenary session on Friday.
