Independent lawmaker Chung Dong-young has urged U.S. President Barack Obama to seek direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il to resolve Pyongyang’s nuclear issue.
The former unification minister made the call during a speech at the National Press Club in Washington on Saturday.
Chung said in tackling Pyongyang’s nuclear issue, it would be more effective for Obama to sit down with Kim rather than negotiate with the regime that takes power after Kim.
Chung cited the example of a U.S.-North Korea summit held in 1972, saying that if Obama and Kim meet directly, the development would provide an opportunity for the North to join the international community.
Chung also proposed that the U.S. and the North set up liaison offices in Washington and Pyongyang.
