National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Won Sei-hoon says North Korea has a cyber attack organization made up of more than one-thousand people.

Won made the remark in a report submitted Thursday to a parliamentary intelligence committee as part of an inquiry on the intelligence agency.

Won said the cyber attack organization focuses on gathering data and creating social confusion through its operations. He said that in a state of war, the organization is likely to be at the center of any attacks that are aimed at paralyzing the state functions of enemies.

Won added that the cyber attack organization is affiliated with the Reconnaissance Bureau of the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces and has hacking bases in various parts of the North as well as in China.

The intelligence chief said the government was hit with some 48-thousand cyber attacks from 2004 until this year, including acts of hacking information at the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit as well as personal computers of lawmakers and their aides.
