North Korea’s official Korean Central Television broadcast Friday night a special program on the North’s shelling of South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island in late November.
The 50-minute program featured four soldiers from a unit that conducted the artillery attack on the South Korean island on November 23rd.
A sergeant claimed in the program that the shelling was a merciless thunderbolt of retaliation in response to South Korea’s preemptive artillery attack.
Another sergeant said that he and his fellow soldiers cheered and celebrated a victory, as their artillery shells destroyed South Korean guard posts and artillery positions.
An officer made the false claim that South Korea used to fire artillery shells and make military provocations into North Korean waters despite repeated warnings from the North. He added that the shelling on Yeonpyeong Island clearly showed that North Korea is sincere in its vow to retaliate mercilessly.
The program was aired to mark the 19th anniversary of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s inauguration as supreme commander of Korean People’s Army.
