Finance Ministry Accused of Violating Election Rules

The National Election Commission has criticized the Ministry of Strategy and Finance for announcing its review on political parties’ welfare-related campaign promises, saying it violates the duty of public servants to remain neutral during elections.

During a meeting at the Gwacheon government complex on Thursday, the election commission charged that with only seven days left before the official elections, the ministry’s announcement highlighting the excessively high estimated costs for the parties’ campaign pledges could affect voters’ decisions and distort election outcomes.

The commission said the ministry violated its duty to maintain neutrality during elections, sending an official document urging the Finance Ministry to abide by election rules.

The government’s joint welfare taskforce held a meeting headed by Second Vice Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon on Wednesday, to announce the results of the ministry’s review on the political parties’ welfare-related campaign pledges.
