S. Korea, US Discussing Combined Cyber Warfare Drills

Anchor: South Korea and the U.S. are discussing plans to hold regular combined drills to guard against the growing threat of cyber warfare. Our Kim Soyon tells us more.

Report: The South Korean Defense Ministry and the U.S. Department of Defense opened their second Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD) in Seoul Wednesday.

A senior South Korean Defense Ministry official says that during the two-day dialogue, the two sides will discuss response measures against cyber warfare agreed to during last year’s Security Consultative Meeting(SCM).

The official said the two sides will soon launch a working consultation body that will discuss concrete plans for joint cyber warfare drills, training of professionals and bilateral cooperation in space and aviation.

The two sides will also discuss substantive ways to deter North Korea’s nuclear threat. The Korean ministry official says practical means will be discussed to substantiate Washington’s verbal promise to provide a nuclear umbrella for South Korea.

The official says that the Korea-U.S. Extended Deterrence Policy Committee has been discussing measures since last year to deter North Korea’s nuclear threats, but the latest meeting in Seoul will cover more details. He added that the field execution of the ongoing tabletop exercise (TTX) will also be discussed in Seoul.

Defense Ministry policy director Im Kwan-bin is leading the South Korean delegation at the talks while Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia David Helvey is leading the U.S. delegation.

Also attending the talks are Director of the South Korean Foreign Ministry’s North American Bureau Lee Baek-sun and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy Bradley Roberts.
