South Korea and the U.S. have agreed to form a joint working group to discuss the issue of suspected oil leaks at the Yongsan Garrison, downtown Seoul.
Seoul City says the decision was reached during an environmental division meeting of the Status of Forces Agreement held with the Environment Ministry and U.S. Forces Korea on Monday.
The two sides will form a bilateral working-level committee within this week consisting of officials from the Seoul City government, the ministry and U.S. Forces Korea. The committee will hold its first meeting next Tuesday.
Korea has urged the U.S. 17 times to inspect the Yongsan base, but the U.S. has been unresponsive to a joint inspection citing the Status of Forces Agreement.
Seoul City says it will ask the U.S. to disclose results of decontamination it conducted at the base, but it's not clear yet whether a joint inspection will be consented to.
