Top Office Staff Member Appears as Witness in Impeachment Trial

Lee Young-sun, a staff member at the presidential office, was summoned as a witness at the fourth hearing in President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment trial on Thursday.
The National Assembly’s impeachment committee grilled Lee, an employee of the presidential security service, on whether Choi Soon-sil and other shadowy confidantes to the president visited the top office.
During the hearing that ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lee refused to answer when asked about how many times a month Choi visited the presidential office, citing the sensitive nature of his job. He claimed he would be breaking the law on guarding the president if he testifies.
Constitutional Court Justice Kang Il-won urged the employee to give a clear response, saying that Lee could otherwise raise suspicions that crimes were committed.
