A new survey finds that the People’s Party's Ahn Cheol-soo is fast catching up with the Democratic Party's Moon Jae-in in the race to the top office.
In the Gallup Korea poll on one-thousand-five people conducted from Tuesday to Thursday, 38 percent chose Moon as their best choice for next president.
While Moon gained seven percentage points from last week to keep the top spot, Ahn came in second with 35 percent, adding 16 percentage points from the previous poll.
In the last two weeks, Ahn has seen his approval rating surge 25 percentage points.
The Liberty Korea Party's Hong Joon-pyo, meanwhile, came in third with seven percent of those surveyed expressing support. That’s up three percentage points from last week.
Yoo Seong-min of the splinter right-wing Bareun Party came in fourth with four percent followed by minor progressive Justice Party candidate Sim Sang-jung with three percent. Both Yoo and Sim saw growth of two percentage points from last week in their approval rating.
The survey had a 95 percent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus three-point-one percentage points. Details on the latest survey are available on the Web site of Gallup Korea or the National Fair Election Survey Deliberation Commission (www.nesdc.go.kr).
