Pres. Moon, Party Leaders Agree to Set up Consultative Body

The presidential office says the nation’s five political parties have agreed to President Moon Jae-in's proposal for the establishment and operation of a permanent consultative body on state affairs comprising rival camp lawmakers and government officials.
The top office’s spokesman Park Soo-hyun said that Moon made the proposal on Friday during a luncheon with the floor leaders of the ruling Democratic Party, main opposition Liberty Korea Party, People’s Party, Bareun Party and the Justice Party.
The president also reaffirmed his campaign pledge to seek a constitutional revision through a referendum during local elections next year.

During his campaign, Moon called for changing the current single-term, five-year presidency into a four-year term with the possibility of reelection limited to two terms, starting from the year 2022.

The president said public opinions should be sufficiently reflected during the political discourse about the amendment, and that revising the election system should also be discussed.

Separately, Moon said he will assume a cautious approach on the deployment of the THAAD missile defense in consideration of upcoming summits with the United States and China.
