Acting Justice Minister Offers to Resign Amid Scandal

Acting Justice Minister Lee Chang-jae offered to resign on Friday, a day after his ministry launched an internal investigation into corruption allegations.

Lee has served as acting head since last November, when Justice Minister Kim Hyun-woong stepped down amid the scandal investigation into President Park Geun-hye.

Lee said Friday he has done his best to maintain law and order during a national crisis, and giving up his position is a necessary step to win the people's trust in light of the current investigation.

Lee Young-ryeol, chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and a ranking Justice Ministry official Ahn Tae-geun have also offered to resign over allegations they exchanged cash envelopes during a dinner.

President Moon Jae-in ordered the Justice Ministry and the Supreme Public Prosecutors' Office Wednesday to investigate the allegations.

A presidential official has noted that Lee and Ahn's resignations cannot be accepted as they now face internal investigation.

Following the president's order, the Justice Ministry and the prosecution set up a 22-member joint inspection team to look into the case.
