S. Korea to Set up body to Investigate Corruption of Ranking Officials

The government plans to set up an independent body to investigate corruption and influence-peddling involving high-level government officials within this year.

An official said that the plan will be included in the top 100 policy goals to be announced on Wednesday by the State Affairs Planning Advisory Committee, which served as President Moon Jae-in’s de facto transition team. The committee wrapped up its two months of activities last week.

The installation of the independent body to investigate high-profile officials is one of Moon’s top reform plans for the prosecution since he campaign his election.

The proposed organization will deal with cases involving top officials, prosecutors, generals, lawmakers and their families. It will also investigate irregularities by presidential relatives.

The committee also included a plan to separate the prosecution’s exclusive rights to investigate and indict, and to realize checks and balances between the prosecution and police.
