Labor Minister Nominee Apologizes over Tax Evasion Allegations

Labor minister nominee, Kim Young-joo, said on Friday that she is deeply sorry over allegations her daughter avoided paying taxes on gifts she received.

Kim made the remark during her confirmation hearing at the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee.

Her comments came after lawmaker Shin Bo-ra of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party said it is difficult to believe the nominee’s claim that her daughter in her mid-30s, who has no job experience, came to have 255 million won, or about 222-thousand dollars, in assets by working part-time at her university.

Kim said that prior her confirmation hearing, she had not known that gift taxes are charged on the type of money her daughter obtained for the past 30 years or so.

Kim said her daughter received 20 million won in research funds while serving as a research assistant in the university and obtained roughly 20 million won in scholarships given out to intern research assistants.

The nominee said that her daughter received around two million won in allowance every year on major holidays from a large number of relatives, adding that she has more than 20 bankbooks where she stored the allowance. Kim said she knows that such a situation does not meet the standard of the public.
