Gov't May Lower Power Reserve Margin by up to 2%p in 2030

A committee that deliberates over and finalizes the plan on electricity supply and demand held a briefing in Seoul on Friday and disclosed a draft of the plan, which would be the eighth of its kind to be produced.

The government draws up a 15-year vision plan every two years for the stable supply and demand of electricity.

The committee forecast that the power reserve margin would stand between 20 and 22 percent in 2030. In the seventh supply and demand plan, the margin had stood at 22 percent.

The eighth plan is expected to see a drop of up to two percentage points in the reserve margin compared to the previous plan.

Every time the reserve margin falls by one percentage point, the need to build a one-gigawatt plant disappears.

The committee said that the adjustment in the reserve margin would save investment costs toward building one nuclear reactor, one coal-fired power plant and one liquefied natural gas plant.
