DP Turns Cold Shoulder to SMEs Minister Nominee

The ruling Democratic Party(DP) is exerting all-out efforts to secure parliamentary approval for Supreme Court chief justice nominee Kim Meong-su.

Such efforts come as the opposition camp is opposed to Kim’s nomination, claiming he is politically biased and as the National Assembly rejected President Moon Jae-in’s pick to head the Constitutional Court on Monday.

The DP is apparently concerned that it might have difficulty securing the upper hand in budget discussions and legislation efforts at the regular session if Kim’s nomination fails to win parliament’s approval. Six candidates for top posts have, so far, failed to pass the screening process since the launch of the Moon Jae-in government.

During a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council on Wednesday, DP Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae said Kim is the right person for carrying out judicial reform.

Such support is in stark contrast to the cold shoulder that the party has turned to Park Seong-jin, who has been named to head the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The DP revealed on Wednesday that it will state on a report on the results of Park’s confirmation hearing that he is unfit for the nominated post in a bid to get him to step down voluntarily.

The DP has concluded that Park is not right for the ministerial post as he has failed to provide clear explanations on various suspicions and ideological disputes.

A senior DP official said that if Park doesn’t step down on his own, the party has no other choice but to pressure him to do so. He expressed doubt that the presidential office would push forward the nomination of a candidate who is considered to be unfit.
