Unification Ministry: Chinese Official Likely to Visit N. Korea

South Korea's Unification Ministry says there is a possibility a Chinese government official will visit North Korea following the end of the Chinese Communist Party’s(CCP) 19th Congress.

A senior ministry official raised the possibility when he spoke to reporters on Thursday, saying China sent an official to the North following the CCP’s 18th Congress.

Exchanges between senior-level officials of China and North Korea have virtually been suspended after the 2013 execution of the North Korean leader's uncle Jang Song-thaek, who was considered to be pro-China, and after Beijing actively began to implement UN sanctions.

The official said that, since the end of the CCP's 19th Congress, China is clearly showing active signs of improving ties with South Korea, adding that it needs to be seen how China will go about dealing with the North.

The official also talked about Chinese President Xi Jinping sending a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un about his hopes for development in bilateral relations under new circumstances.

The official said it’s worth noting that Xi’s message included terms such as regional stability, joint prosperity as well as peace and stability.

Earlier on Thursday, the North's state media Korea Central News Agency said that Xi sent a reply on Wednesday to Kim's recent congratulatory message about the successful 19th Congress and Xi's re-election as the leader of the country.

It marked the first time for Xi to send a message to Kim in nearly 16 months. On July eleventh of last year, Xi sent a congratulatory message to Kim to mark the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and North Korea.
