Pres. Moon Attends ASEAN Plus Three Summit

President Moon Jae-in, who is on his last leg of a three-nation tour of Southeast Asia, attended the ASEAN Plus Three summit in Manila on Tuesday.
The gathering saw the participation of ASEAN leaders as well as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
Moon said during the summit that there is a need for the ASEAN, South Korea and China to mature further in order to build an East Asian community.
In particular, Moon expressed hope that the vision of setting up a South Korea-ASEAN joint community, which he unveiled during his Southeast Asia tour, will contribute to the region’s prosperity and go on to become the basis for realizing an East Asian community.
Moon also spoke on North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. He emphasized the importance of the international community’s stern response, including implementing UN Security Council resolutions. He also called on ASEAN Plus Three members to play an active role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the North’s nuclear issue and establishing permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
