S. Korea Welcomes UN's North Korea Human Rights Resolution

South Korea has hailed a UN panel's adoption of a resolution condemning North Korea's human rights abuses.
The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said in a statement that the Seoul government welcomes the new resolution adopted by consensus by a total of 61 countries during the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The ministry noted that this year's resolution particularly addressed the human rights of families separated by the Korean War and foreigners detained in North Korea.
The resolution called on Pyongyang to resume reunions of the separated families and to provide foreign detainees with access to diplomatic missions and other necessary arrangements to "confirm their status and to communicate with their families."
The statement also said that South Korea again urges North Korea to take concrete, substantial measures, in an immediate manner, in order to improve the human rights conditions of the North Korean people, in accordance with the UN resolution.
