MDP Chough, Choo Fail to Narrow Differences

Tensions are still escalating within the minor opposition Millennium Democratic Party as the leaders of two factions have failed to narrow differences over pressing internal matters.

MDP Chairman Chough Soon-hyung met with Representative Choo Mi-ae in a closed late-night meeting Thursday to discuss the party's recent strife over the formation of an election campaign committee.

Choo reiterated her call for Chough's resignation over the party's political tailspin in the wake of the opposition-led impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun. However, Chough turned down Choo's request, saying such demands lack justification.

Meanwhile, a group of party candidates nominated to run in metropolitan constituencies in the upcoming elections visited Chough's home, urging him to step down. A group of officials at the party's secretariat are continuing a protest rally after tendering their resignations, demanding the party chairman resign and form an emergency operations panel.

With no signs of compromise in sight, the launch of the party's election campaign committee, which was set to take place on Friday, has been postponed.
