SNU Hospital Finds Obese People More Susceptible to Fine Dust

South Korean medical scientists say people with big bellies may be more vulnerable to fine dust.

Researchers at the Seoul National University Hospital on Tuesday announced their findings, which draw a correlation between fine dust concentration, abdominal adiposity and lung capacity.

The doctors analyzed the medical files of one-thousand-876 men at the SNU Hospital Healthcare System's Gagnam Center and the fine dust levels around their homes.

Among them, those with large waists of around 98 centimeters, or 38 inches, saw their lung capacity index decline ten percent every time fine dust concentration grew around ten micrograms per cubic meter.

A thinner group with an average waist measurement of 87 centimeters saw no changes in their lung function when exposed to the same amount of fine dust.

The results of the study were published on the latest edition of the International Journal of Obesity.
