Research Team Develops Substance to Collect Precious Metals from Seawater

A domestic research team has developed a substance that is capable of collecting precious metals from seawater.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on Monday that researchers from the Pohang University of Science and Technology(POSTECH) successfully developed a substance that has a similar function to sea squirts and can selectively collect specific metals.

As marine filter feeders, sea squirts collect and enrich various heavy or rare metals using the substance tunichrome, which is found in their blood.

The newly developed material, a chemical combination of chitin nanofiber and gallic acid, functions like tunichrome to gather certain metals.

As one of the ministry’s maritime bioengineering R&D projects, the development was published in the American Chemical Society’s journal “Applied Materials and Interface.”
