More Red Fire Ants Found at Incheon Port

Dozens more red fire ants have been discovered at Incheon Port's container terminal storage yard where a queen ant was spotted for the first time in the nation on Friday.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Monday that a joint government and civic inspection found 70 more red fire ants on Saturday.

That brings the total count of red fire ants found in concrete cracks at the port this month to 776.

It was the sixth sighting of the invasive pests in the nation since the first discovery in September in the port city of Busan.

Originally from South America, red fire ants are one of the world’s 100 worst invasive alien species designated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

They have a toxic sting that can cause an allergic reaction and, in severe cases, death. Their numbers can grow explosively and therefore an early stage response is very important.
