'Domestic Drone Successfully Flies for Over 4 Hours'

A domestically developed unmanned aerial vehicle has successfully flown for four-and-a-half hours, much longer than the existing record of one hour 24 minutes.

A team at the Korea Institute of Materials Science led by Doctor Yang Cheol-nam said the drone they developed which runs on fuel cell flew 310 kilometers in four hours 30 minutes.

The fuel cell power source which the team developed activates at low temperatures of below 80 degrees Celsius. The vehicle has also reduced noise and vibration compared to existing drones. It's also become more difficult to trace through heat detection or acoustic sensor.

The institute will gradually expand the flight time to six, eight and ten hours. It aims for commercialization within three years.
