S. Korea Loses Heartbreaker to Australia at Asian Cup Final

South Korea lost to Australia 2-1 in an extra-time showdown at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup final at Stadium Australia in Sydney Saturday.

Massimo Luongo opened the scoring in the 45th minute, and James Troisi sealed the victory in extra time, giving the host its first-ever Asian title since it moved from the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) to the AFC in 2006.

Son Heung-min leveled the score during the second injury time, but the Taegeuk Warriors led by coach Uli Stielike could not capitalize on a chance for another equalizer after a Troisi’s game winning goal in the 106th minute.

This was South Korea’s first appearance at the Asian Cup final in 27 years and entered the match seeking its first title at the quadrennial event in 55 years. The South Korean national team won the tournament’s first two editions in 1956 and 1960.

Meanwhile, the UAE beat Iraq 3-2 to finish third on Friday.
