Ruling Saenuri Party Wins One Less Seat than Minjoo Party of Korea open the window of AOD

The 20th general elections on Wednesday handed a crushing defeat to the ruling Saenuri Party. This result has cast a shadow over the effective implementation of President Park Geun-hye’s top policy agendas during her remaining term.

The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea gained majority with 123 seats and stripped the country's ruling camp of a parliamentary majority for the first time in 16 years.

The ruling party claimed only 122 legislative seats out of the 300-seat parliament. While, the minor opposition People’s Party, composed of Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo and others who defected from the main opposition camp, emerged as a powerful alternative party with 38 seats.

With the Justice Party securing six seats, the National Assembly will be dominated by 167 opposition lawmakers from next month. Eleven others were elected as independent candidates.

The Saenuri Party may attempt to regain its position as the largest party by embracing the return of some independent winners, who defected from the party after they were overlooked in the nomination process.

In addition to the diminished ruling party presence, the three-party system, the first of its kind in 20 years in Korea, is another change brought by the general elections.

The People’s Party, which makes up 12-point-seven percent of the new parliament, will likely become a “casting voter,” exercising decisive votes over major contested bills.

Presidential Spokesman Jeong Yeon-guk met with reporters on Thursday, saying that the presidential office hopes that the 20th National Assembly will work for the people.

The spokesman briefly added that people clearly reflected their demands for a working parliament in the election outcome.

Meanwhile, the Public Security Department of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office announced on Thursday that it booked one-thousand-451 people for alleged election-related offenses in the 20th general elections, including 104 lawmakers-elect.
