Early Heat Wave open the window of AOD

Write : 2017-06-25

Heat advisories have been issued nationwide over the past week amid sweltering heat in early summer.
The early heat wave also comes amid a protracted drought. The temperature has already risen above 35 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days in some areas, prompting the issuance of a heat wave warning.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts this summer to be as hot as last year.
The sultry heat is arriving earlier each year due to climate change. This year's first heat advisory was issued on May 19 in Daegu and South Gyeongsang Province. It's the same date as last year and more than a week earlier than in the past.
In Seoul, the heat wave warnings have also been issued earlier than before. Its first heat advisory on June 16 is more than 20 days earlier than in the past three years.
The KMA explains that hot and dry air from northern China has traveled toward the Korean Peninsula. A high pressure front remaining for an extended period around the peninsula and warm southwesterly winds have also contributed to the rising temperatures.
The long drought, sunny weather, and ground heat are also factors.
However, coastal areas are reporting cooler weather thanks to offshore winds. The seawater has not warmed up yet and the ocean breeze is also keeping the heat at bay. Temperatures are often ten degrees lower in coastal areas.
The Public Safety and Security Ministry has launched special inspections into constructions sites and other facilities vulnerable to the heat wave. Officials are examining response measures and operation of situations rooms at provincial governments. To date, no heat-related damage has been reported.
