Seo Taiji’s seismic influence on the Korean pop scene history can be seen from his nickname – “Culture President.” He had such a far-reaching impact on the Korean music history that Korea’s music chronology is divided into pre- and post-Seo Taiji.
Before Seo broke into the scene, there was no concept of independent rock band in Korea. There were no clubs or venues for independent or underground rock bands to perform, but Seo changed all that. He introduced very American rock, which was criticized by some as the invasion of American music. It was only natural for Korean audience, especially those past their teens and early 20s, to shun the rapid-fire rap and rebellious lyrics. However, such defiance against the mainstream society and tradition lit a fire under the younger generation. They saw Seo Taiji and his boys as the symbol of freedom and independence, which he remains to this day.
Seo released a total of 10 albums as the leader of “Seo Taiji and Boys” and nine as solo. November 29th marks the 15th anniversary of his debut. His 15th anniversary commemorative albums sold out on the first day they were put on the shelves and tickets to his 15th anniversary concert sold out in just 10 minutes.
