Actress Jang Ja-yeon of “Boys over Flowers” was found dead on Saturday in her home at a Seoul suburb in an apparent suicide. Jang had played Sunny, one of three girls who torment the female lead, Geum Jan-di, in the popular TV drama.
Jang’s body was discovered by her older sister. The police announced that the 27-year-old actress hung herself after suffering from depression. Her illness was so bad that she had regularly visited hospital for treatment. She had been living with her older sister after their parents had died a car accident 10 years ago.
Jang’s funeral was held early Monday morning at the Seoul National University Hospital in Bundang and attended by her family, friends, and fellow actresses and actors. Koo Hye-seon, who plays Geum Jan-di in “Boys over Flowers,” also came to the funeral to bid the last goodbye to her co-star. Other cast members, including the four male leads, have paid their last respects over the weekend.
Jang’s cremated remains will be buried next to her parents in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province. Her last works are films “They Are Coming” and “Penthouse Elephant” due for release later this year.
