Oh Kwang Sunim
2012-05-25
Last month, the Cultural Heritage Administration designated Yeondeunghoe, or the Lotus Lantern Festival, as an important intangible cultural heritage. The popular annual event celebrates the birth of the Buddha over two and a half millennia ago. My guest this week is Oh Kwang Sunim, a Buddhist monk from Serbia who is ordained in the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. He also has years of experience in the Theravada Buddhist tradition of Southeast Asia. During our conversation, we talk about some of the basic tenets of Buddhism, how Koreans celebrate the Buddha's birth, and Oh Kwang Sunim’s own spiritual journey.
