Yoon Suk Yeol was inaugurated as South Korea’s 20th president on May 10 under the slogan, “Again South Korea! A New Nation of People.”
Yoon was elected after winning the presidential race less than a year after he announced his intention to enter politics.
Since assuming office, Yoon has taken various unprecedented steps as the head of state.
He relocated the presidential office from the presidential compound, Cheong Wa Dae, to the defense ministry headquarters in Yongsan and opened the former presidential compound to the public. He also relocated the presidential residence to what was the foreign minister's residence in Hannam-dong in central Seoul following remodeling efforts.
From the day after his inauguration, Yoon held a question-and-answer session with reporters while heading to his office a total of 61 times.
The Yoon government has focused on economic security, including establishing global supply chains, while emphasizing freedom and values-based alliances. The government also placed importance on strengthening its traditional solidarity with the U.S. and Japan while assuming a hardline stance on North Korea.
Yoon held a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden just eleven days after taking office and also made efforts to mend frayed ties with Japan.
Regarding Pyongyang, the Yoon government presented what it called a “bold initiative” offering support to the reclusive state in return for steps toward denuclearization.
As for key tasks in domestic affairs, the Yoon government has vowed to reform the labor, pension and education systems while promoting “private sector-led” economic growth.
