5. DP Scores Upset Win in Local Elections
The ruling Grand National Party (GNP) suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) in the June second local elections.

Of the 16 mayoral and gubernatorial posts up for grabs, the DP won seven, the GNP six and the Liberty Forward Party one, with independent candidates picking up the two other seats.

Out of 228 posts, including the heads of cities, city councils and education boards, opposition parties grabbed 146, including 92 for the DP. The GNP, meanwhile, only managed to secure 82 of the posts.
